James Michael reports:

After a revelatory outing on Thursday, the crew were up for showing off their improvements and better technique. We went up to the start knowing how an Eight SHOULD feel, and were determined to keep that feeling all the way to the bunting.

Our practice start was controlled and measured, and after some faff in the gut we followed LMBC M3 up to the start. They are in front of us in bumps- they're the crew to beat.

We had another controlled and measured start and settled to 34 after Ditton, and were smooth, efficient, and controlled- exactly the things we weren't at Bedford. The boat felt great, and we were immensely proud of our performance. For us, it was the best we'd done so far. We were happy with our performance on the finish line, and later when results were checked at City boathouse I found out how well we'd done.

Coming second in M3 division doesn't really cover how happy we are and how we felt. We would have been soundly thrashed by some of the boats behind us had we raced the course last weekend. We were a mere 2 seconds behind Queen's M1 and were competing with boats in the division above us in bumps for times, and not far off boats from the M1 division.

Overall, this is just what we needed, but we're not going to get too confident- we know how it can feel and how it should feel, and we know that whilst we've improved there's a lot of work to do. We're controlling the power and working on it, but this was an amazing race for us all.
